Wind tunnel test of airfoil with erosion and leading edge protection

Abstract This paper describes wind tunnel tests of a NACA 63 3 – 418 airfoil with erosion and leading edge protection. Measurements are carried out at high Reynolds number ( Re = 5 million) representing modern turbines. Three examples deviations from the perfect surface shown. It is seen how presence roughness mesh degrades aerodynamics that more important than actual topology mesh. That also case for stall strips where small strip influences performance slightly less big strip, but alone influencing significantly. Finally, simulated protection (LEP), represented by sheet paper, can influence significantly as leads to backward facing step. Furthermore, measurements showed correct mounting LEP avoid too losses in aerodynamic performance. Investigating impact reduced rotor annual energy production between 0.3% 4.0%.
